After attending several high school sports events, I have noticed a distinct lack of attendance by the student bodies of some schools. And I have to say I am disappointed.

To a certain extent, sports are only as good as the audience demands. If there is no audience or the audience present is not overly interested in the sport being played, the game and athletes suffer for it. On a high school level, the people that mean the most behind an athlete’s family, are undoubtedly their friends. It would be great to see those friends out supporting each other, whether in sports or other extracurricular activities.

I am always thrilled to see parents out enmasse to suppor their children and their children’s teammates but, just once, I would love to walk into a high school gym and wonder where I’m going to watch the game from because every seat is filled. Maybe I just need to wait a little longer.

See you on the sidelines!
