Talent vs. beauty

By now the name Susan Boyle probably at least has a familiar ring to it, unless you’ve been living under a rock. The frumpy, 47-year-old Brit wowed fans and judges (including American Idol’s Simon Cowell) on “Britain’s Got Talent” with her rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream.”
I was as impressed as everyone else by her beautiful voice, but I am a little lost as to why this is such a worldwide phenomenon. For some reason, it’s hard for people to think that some doudy middle-aged woman who supposedly has never been kissed and lives alone with her cats could be so talented. Talented and good looking are not necessarily synonymous, as proven here. The most interesting part to me was the look of amusement on the judges’ and audience members’ faces as Boyle walked on stage, which changed to shock and awe as they listened to her sing. So, good for Boyle for proving everyone wrong. But, I am curious to see what would happen if she wins the competition. Will the hype eventually die out? Even though she is talented, will her musical style sell records? Will she be sharing the stage and topping record charts over Beyonce or Carrie Underwood? It’s hard to picture, but we’ll see I guess.
