Pig Out Bowl

Some might think it too late in the season for this hearty appetizer, billed as a “hands-down winner for your favorite armchair quarterback.” Although I’m not a sports fan, I don’t think you can ever go wrong with cheese and bread, regardless the season.
Last week, I posted a recipe noting it came from a pile on my desk marked “for the blog.” Like the previous one, it was ripped from some magazine and that is as much background as I am able to provide.
The appetizer is loaded with cheese and bacon, so it if appeals to you, you’re probably not counting calories. However, there was a note with the recipe that if you’re tempted to substitute regular mayonnaise for the light variety that’s called for, don’t weaken as the light is supposed to produce a creamier dip.
The Cheesy Bowl
• 8 ounces Colby-Jack cheese, shredded
• 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
• 2 8-ounce packages bacon bits
• 1 ½ cups light mayonnaise
• ½ cup onion, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 26-ounce round loaf bread
Stir together all ingredients except bread; set aside.
Hollow out bread, reserving torn pieces. Spoon dip into bread; place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for one hour. Serve with torn bread and/or sliced apples.
Makes 3 ½ cups.
