Local students fare well on WASL

Pullman School District Assistant Superintendent Susan Reyes said 97.6 percent of the seniors met the writing requirement by the time they graduated.
She said 96.4 percent also passed the reading requirement by the time they were ready to graduate this spring.
Statewide, 93 percent of the seniors in the class of 2009 passed the writing and the reading exams. Passing the reading and writing sections of the WASL is one of four state high school graduation requirements.
Fewer than five students in the Pullman School District failed to pass the writing test, while fewer than 10 did not pass the reading section. Reyes said 85 percent of the seniors in the district passed the math section.
Palouse School District Superintendent Bev Fox said 100 percent of the seniors in Garfield-Palouse passed the writing and the reading state exams.
Fox said 96 percent of last year’s 10th-graders passed the writing portion of the exam, 88.46 passed the reading and a 52 percent passed the math section.
The WASL will be replaced by with two new state tests beginning spring 2010. The Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) will be administered for grades third through eight, and the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) for high school students.
