Shots fired during Albion argument
June 24, 2009, 11:37 am
Whitman County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched at about 9 p.m. to a residence on D Street in Albion, where resident Michael Welch, 56, and Clark Proctor, 39, of Pullman had allegedly engaged in an argument earlier, Undersheriff Ron Rockness said. Deputies were told that Proctor was asked to leave the property during the fight, but refused.
Welch is then believed to have displayed a gun and let go several shots into the air before Proctor finally left.
Deputies located Proctor in Pullman shortly after the incident, and he was arrested for second-degree trespassing. Welch may be charged with unlawfully displaying/discharging a firearm.
“Realistically, in this fine state, you have a right, if you feel threatened, to defend yourself. Was he defending himself? You have to work those things out first before you press charges,” Rockness said.
