Idaho lawmakers refuse request to turn over e-mails
June 30, 2009, 4:41 pm
The issue came to light when the Daily News made a records request to Rep. John “Bert” Stevenson concerning e-mails between himself and Moscow City Councilman Walter Steed.
The request sought e-mails regarding two bills that would impact Moscow’s ability to sell water across the stateline to the Hawkins’ Companies proposed retail development.
Stevenson responded to the request saying he had deleted or not read the majority of the messages sent by Steed and the Daily News would have to petition the district court to recover them.
Though officials do have to retain records after a request has been made Idaho Attorney General Office Deputy Bill Von Tagen confirmed that no mechanism was in place compelling legislators to keep their e-mails prior to a request.
