Latah County Highway District election Aug. 4

July 15, 2009, 11:20 am

The North Latah Highway District will have two contested positions in its Aug. 4 election.

Subdistrict No. 2 Commissioner Richard Hansen of Harvard will appear alone on the ballot but will face a challenge from write-in candidate Nancy Maxeiner of Viola.

Subdistrict 3 Commissioner Orland Arneberg of Troy will face challenges from Shawn Farley of Troy and Lee Horning of Deary.

The election is from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at four polling places throughout the county. Election polling places generally are defined by what school district the voter is located, Latah County Auditor Susan Petersen said.

Moscow and surrounding area residents will vote at the Latah County Fair Exhibit Building. Troy area residents will vote at the Troy Lions Club and Community Center; Potlatch voting is at the Scenic Six Park Building; and voters in the Deary area will vote at Deary City Hall.

The North District is responsible for more than 800 miles of roads in the county and has an annual budget of roughly $3 million, said Dan Carscallen, clerk of the district. Carscallen encouraged people to take part in the election, saying most people aren’t aware of the what the district does until there is a problem.

“It’s important that people know what’s going on,” he said. “Most of the time we don’t mind being in are own little corner here but as soon as the snow flies or there’s a big pothole, then that’s when people know who we are.”
