Man being sought by U.S. Marshal's Office spotted in Tekoa

August 28, 2009, 12:46 pm

Whitman County sheriff’s deputies are searching for a man who recently failed to report to a Spokane prison.

At about 4 p.m. Thursday, an off-duty deputy spotted a man at the Tekoa swimming pool who is wanted by the U.S. Marshals Office for escaping from the Geiger Correctional Facility.

The deputy alerted the sheriff’s office, but the subject, Clifford Charles Pluff, took off for his car before backup could arrive.

The off-duty deputy unsuccessfully attempted to arrest Pluff before he ran from the scene. Deputies scoured the area but could not find Pluff.

Undersheriff Ron Rockness said he’s not sure why Pluff was incarcerated in the first place, but said it’s his understanding that Pluff was expected to show up at the minimum-security Geiger Correctional Facility to finish his sentence and never showed up.

Rockness said law-enforcement agencies around the area have been notified of Pluff’s escape.

“My guess is he won’t be back to Tekoa for a while,” he said.

Anyone with information about Pluff’s whereabouts is encouraged to call the Whitman County Sheriff’s Office at (509) 397-6266, or their local law enforcement agency.
