UPDATE: 2:35 p.m. Missing hunter found dead near Colton

December 14, 2009, 10:37 am

A body found by search-and-rescue crews Monday morning near Colton has been positively identified as Glenn Voshell, who had been missing since Saturday.

Voshell, 45, was a teacher and former girls' basketball coach at Colton School. His body was located at about 9:15 a.m. Monday morning and retrieved at about 1:30 p.m., Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers said.

The area where Voshell was found is steep and rugged. He is believed to have tripped and fallen about 400 feet to his death, Myers said.

"Though we would rather have found Glenn alive, we're glad we found him at all," Myers said.

Voshell was reported missing Saturday evening after failing to return from a hunting trip with his black Labrador retriever, Jake.

Myers said the dog remained by Voshell's side throughout the weekend, and it was his barking that helped searchers locate Voshell's body.

"The dog really came through," Myers said. "We'd been in the area before, it just so happened we didn't see him until (Monday)."

The Whitman County Sheriff's Office received assistance in the search from the Latah County Sheriff's Posse, Whitman Couny Fire Search and Rescue, Pullman Fire Department, Pullman Police Department, the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Office, various Whitman County rural firefighters and several of Voshell's friends and acquaintances.

K-9 units from Nez Perce County and Spokane County also assisted in the search, as did helicopters from Fairchild Air Force Base and the U.S. Border Patrol.
