Arrests made in fake gift card scam

January 27, 2009, 9:56 am

Area business owners and managers are being urged to watch for shady customers, as well as what they’re paying with.

Spokane Valley Police Sgt. Dave Reagan said a Jan. 20 hotel room bust uncovered evidence that a group had been making counterfeit VISA, MasterCard, and American Express gift cards that could make their way into the Pullman area.

Reagan said it’s believed the group stole the gift cards and were seeking the kind in which identification numbers are printed, rather than embossed or raised.

Reagan believes the thieves in Spokane had partners working in retail stores on the west side of Washington who would steal the numbers off customer’s valid cards. The card numbers on the gift cards were then removed and swapped with a stolen credit card number.
